"Growing up in Middle Park – recollections of the 1940s and 1950s". Speaker - Maurita Harney

Maurita’s grandparents moved into Page Street Middle Park in 1920, and her family has had a continuous presence in the suburb since then. In this talk, Maurita reflects on her experience of growing up in Middle Park in the 1940s and 1950s - the neighbourhood, the schools, the streetscapes and shops. Many of the changes in the suburb since then can be seen as a microcosm of transformations in Australian urban life more generally.

"By the Community, For the Community". Speaker - Adair Bunnett.

When state government bureaucrats decided to locate a morgue and coroners court on the site of the old girls orphanage in 1973 they hadn’t banked on the local South Melbourne community. By the Community explains the history of the site, and revisits some of the issues that bonded the community together and formed the basis for the foundation of Napier Street Aged Care Services. For the Community illustrates the means by which a not-for-profit organisation has delivered sustained high-quality aged care over two decades.
